As a makeup lover, I used to always wonder why many makeup brands in North America did not make makeup primer. It was not until past few years that many brands started selling makeup primers. Foundation primers have been popular in Japan since at least 10 years ago (when I moved to Canada) so I am pleased to see many selections in North America now.
Whan I was on the hunt for makeup primer, I tried many many different kinds including ever famous Smashbox Photo Finish. One of my skin concern is visible pores on my cheeks so I thought these silicone primers will be great, but in the end I decided that I do not like them because I don’t like the feeling of filling in the pores. I feel like I am suffocating my skin and it’s not very good for my skin condition.
So when I saw this Nars primer I was very happy. It is not the kind that just makes your skin flat surface by filling the lines and pores with silicone. It is more like giving your skin more moisture so your pores will naturally be less visible. When skin is moisturized, it absorbes the water like a sponge and plumps up resulting pores to be closed.
Here is how the product looks like:
As you can see, it is a light semi transparent gel cream. Because it is oil-free, it applies super light and feels great on the skin. I think it just feels like a light moisturizer. When applied it looks bit shiny but it dries to semi-matte finish. The website says it contains minerals that absorbs oil to keep skin matte. I have very oily T-zone so I feel like it is not mattifying enough. I like this primer but I think it will work better for people with dry to normal skin. I’ve been using this during the winter but also using Clarins Instant Smooth Perfecting Touch on my cheeks and T-zone when I need extra covering. I want to try the other primer from NARS that contains SPF but unfortunately it’s not avalable in Canada.
My final rating: 3.5 – 4 /5
